Southern Highlands Provincial Government Committed K500, 000 to the organising committee of the 2020 PNG Games Monday in Port Moresby.
Southern Highlands Governor William Powi said during the presentation that sports can bring positive changes to the province and the people.
“The 2020 PNG Games to be hosted in the province will bring a lot of changes to the province and the people.
“We have recently encountered major devastations from the major earthquake and election related problems in the province but hosting of the 2020 Games will improve a lot services,” he said.
Governor Powi said that through hosting of the PNG Games, the province could showcase the uniqueness of the province and change the negative perception portrayed by recent events there.
“The Southern Highlands people are good and friendly people but due to recent election related events recently, our reputation has been tarnished.
“By hosting of the PNG Games, I know the province with its people will be able to showcase our potential as well as show to the others that we are truly are peace loving and caring people,” he said.
Mr Powi also appealed to Oil Search, ExxonMobil and other business houses to partner with the provincial government in hosting of the games in the province.
“I’m appealing to Oil Search and ExxonMobil as well as other business houses to partner with the government in hosting the games in the province.
“I applaud the National Government for making available K2millon from its 2018 National Budget for the games in the province,” he said.
Mr Powi said that the provincial government will make further appropriation of K10 from its provincial budget for the games soon.
“I’m confident that we will successfully host this game though there are challenges ahead in facilitating for the games.
“Planning is well advanced and with the funding available, we will be able to build infrastructure to host the games and I know we will deliver the best game,” he said.
