ONE of Madang’s pioneer bamboo band groups from Siar village near Madang stole the show recently at the Madang Resort Hotel when its members most of who are with grey hair, some bald were able to bash out old numbers from the yester-years.
Siar bamboo band was popular in Madang Province in the late 1960s and the 70s with their bamboo band numbers on the airwaves of the local National Broadcasting Corporation’s Radio Madang.
Their reunion recently to perform at functions in town for guests and tourists was a welcome sight for many senior residents who only heard them on radio.
Madang music artist, Alfred Sibut said the Siar bamboo band were the composers of many popular Madang string-band numbers which were made popular by himself and other Madang music artists.
Sibut said the current line-up of old hands and playing with the flair and style of the 1970s was an exciting sight for many, who turned up for a cock-tail function to raise funds for Team Madang to attend the PNG Games in Kimbe, West New Britain province later this month.
