FORMER PNG Kumul World Cup fullback Josiah Abavu is proud of his younger sibling Bland in his performance with the SP PNG Hunters.
Josiah, in an interview, revealed his younger brother’s presentation in the Intrust Super Cup.
“He used to watch me play at the old PRL stadium with mum and dad. When I scored a try, Bland would always shout at the top of his voice and leap high in front of the spectators,” he said.
“I was playing for the SNS Port Moresby Vipers and I was one of the top try scorers. When I am with the ball in the opponent’s try line, there was no mistake for a try and Bland was always proud of me,” Josiah said.
He said he mentored his brother (Bland) to be like him one day, “and he has made it and I am proud of him”.
Dad Tony Abavu who is the current Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for Hiri district in Central Province said he is proud to produce rugby league players.
“I am a proud of my sons,” he said.
“Josiah has made it into the 2013 Kumuls World Cup and now I have my baby boy Bland playing for the PNG SP Hunters,” the dad said.
This journalist in an interview with Bland back in 2013 after the World Cup recalled Bland saying he wanted to one day play in Kumul jumper.
At that time Bland was just new into the city competition playing for Dobo Warriors. Bland would some time complain to the coach when he was picked for the wing position. But Bland blended well with his performance and was selected in the SNS Port Moresby Vipers in 2015.
And the history of Bland goes on after that. Bland is hoping to get selected in the PNG Kumul suad to ply in the World Cup in 2018.
