Marum selects 29 man squad

 THE SP Hunters Coach, Michael Marum has finally selected a 29 man squad for the 2017 Queensland Intrust super cup competition.

The new look SP Hunters has eight weeks to go before taking on the best of the Queensland competition where they will be vying for their first maiden premiership in the competition .

“PNGRFL Board Chairman, SandisTsaka has endorsed the 29 man squad to take part in this year’s Queensland Cup Competition,” Marum said.

From the 2016 season 14 players have been retained-AdexWera, Ase Boas, Bland Abavu, Butler Moriss, Edward Goma, Enoch Maki, Esau Siune, Henry Wan, Ishmael Balkawa, Sailas Gahuna, Stargroth Amean, Wartovo Puara, Watson Boas and William Aquila.

Former Hunters returning to the fold include inaugural captain Israel Eliab, David Loko, LawrenceTu’u, Noel Joel, Stanton Albert, and Willie Minonga with the inclusion of nine new players in the squad.

They are Anderson Benford, Radley Bawa, Eddie Dafa, Junior Rop,Karo Kauna Jnr, Moses Meninga, Nixon Put, Wawa Paul and Wellington Albert.

Marum added that four academy players in the likes of Aidan Arusa, Joseph Mocke, Muka Peter Kula and Thompson Yakumbawil be released and will join a Digicel cup franchise team to gain some big match experience.

“They will continue to train with the Hunters and hopefully this experience will guide them to bigger things.” Marum said.

Hunters stalwart Wartovo Puara Jnr underwent major shoulder surgery to his left shoulder during the offseason and is currently undergoing rehabilitation.

“He will travel to Brisbane next week for a review after which medical staff will make an assessment when he will resume full body contact training,” he said.

The Hunters will play only one trial match against Northern Pride in Cairns on Saturday February the 18, 2017 and the Captain of the 2017 season will be named at the launch of the Hunters season in Port Moresby later this month

The SP Hunters take on the Central Queensland Capras in Mackay in Round one of the 2017 ISC Competition on Sunday March 5, 2017 before heading home the following week on Sunday March 12, 2017 for their first home game of the season at the NFS Stadium.
